Space Wolf Objective Markers

It’s been really bugging me what to use as markers for these guys, I usually like to build and “army-specific” set, but the puppies were bugging me.

For my guard, I went with the supply dump things, they worked, but I couldnt really go there again.. I considered making mini-drop pods full of kit.. but that was basically rehashing the supplies idea..My daemonhunters army had books and dribbly candles on thier objective markers.

I see a lot of comedy ideas, like piles of puppies, or dog snacks etc, but although I like a laugh, it’s not really the tone i go for in my models (‘cept dem Orks).

Finally decided to go for this..

+++Transmission to Skallgrim of the Blackbrow, Wolf guard of Bran Redmaw’s company: date: 023894.M41/234+++

+++Brother, Scout servitors report discovery of several sites of interest to the Rune Priests. secure sites and await instructions. For Russ, For the Allfather.++++

Each monolith/runestone has some carving on it, some bitz to dress them as though they may have been left by a previous company of wolves, maybe the 13th? maybe Russ? who knows.. and each objective has a servo-skull on it having discovered the site and beaming co-ordinates.. the plan is to paint the skulls with a nice bright osl so the objective stand out a bit, cos I’m a bugger for making markers that blend in :)

I’ll concoct some better individual photos once there's some paint on the things.

Bran Redmaw WiP (2)

Plus a size comparison with the Redmaw model as it’s been requested.

So, here’s my current thinking on Bran..

DSC_7090

Again it’s blu-tak..  I’ve kept the pose essentially the same as the widely preferred pose from the previous post. I changed both the torso and legs, because I wanted something a little less “trimmed up” in order that I can add a fur loincloth and a much larker dynamic fur cloak to the model without overwhelming the detail.

I've also got a different head here, as I want to GS a beard.. and maybe hair (might keep him bald, let me know) all to generally increase the wildness and furryness of this bloke. I’m also thinking about painting that wolf on his chest the same colour as the wolf he becomes (once I decide on that)

So yeah, let me know what you reackon.. I’ll be starting sculpting the GS and actually using glue soon :)

oh and yeah, he’s on a very tall base, I kinda like to do that for my commanders, and it was more necessary with him as the Redmaw’s base is quite stacked too.

DSC_7091

This way, their feet are about the same level. he’s about sixteen feet tall scalewise (2x a marine on an equal footing) that means though that over a marine on a shallower base he positively towers…

..and finally from eye level so you can see what I mean :)

DSC_7093

A skinwolf might have been a better fit.. but as I haven't got to any FW events this year.. and don't fancy buying 3.. I went with making my own. I’m still fairly happy with him, and I’ll certainly use him at least until FW get thier asses in gear and release one. tbh so far all else I’ve seen in use is skinwolves (with chaos insignia intact!) or Orobos wolves, anyway, paint soon..

..thanks for reading and please let me know your thoughts!

The Redmaw – a conversion

My attempt at something to stand in for the Redmaw, at least until Forge world put a model out anyway.DSC_7076

“Should the curse of the Wulfen take him then Bran is transformed into a ravenous wolf-beast; fully twelve feet tall, powerful, fast, and with claws that can rend plasteel and fangs like adamantine daggers”

That’s pretty much the only description we have for it, and while I have gone oversized (scale wise he’s a tad over sixteen feet high, if a marine is eight) I wanted an imposing presence on the table, and for there to be no doubt that this is a monstrous creature, twelve feet isn't that much bigger than a terminator, and shorter than mounted TWC.

More Pictures:DSC_7082DSC_7076DSC_7084 DSC_7077 DSC_7078 DSC_7079 DSC_7080 DSC_7081

Is it perfect? no, not even close, I can see so many flaws :)

But I think it’ll do, I can judge once FW put a model out if I want to replace it, in the meantime I can play Bran (once I actually do a model for the “normal” him :)

I think I have enough pics from the build to put together a short “how I made this” blue-peter style.

Anyway, let me know your thoughts, while I try to get some paint on him.. going to “warm up” on some fenrisian wolves first, as it’s been a looooong time since I painted a furry beast.

Also, let me know your thoughts on colour.

Bran Redmaw – First thoughts

So Bran. Lovely set of rules, which are covered extensively elsewhere on the web, but to summarise, Decent wolf lord, good in CC, frost weapon axe type thing rerolling wounds..And he turns into what is basically a Demon Prince when he’s pissed off. okay, that’s good, I'll buy that…

..oh but wait.. he can outflank if you put him with wolves. and if you go that way, then once he “turns” he can benefit from the unit’s fleet.. oh and he allows you to give outflank to a GH pack too.

So I need this guy. and typically with awesome FW rules, there’s no model yet.

Conversion/Kitbash time!

I blu-takked some initial thoughts together –
DSC_7030
I’m going to do much greenstuffing of pelts, and while I like the calm, assured nature of this model/pose, I fear I might need to try and go balls-out feral with this guy.. dunno, he IS all about patience, control until the right time.. hrm

‘course one can always go in a different direction and “use the pointyfinger” for a classic GW captain style pose..

DSC_7031

again, much GS to follow.. just looking for his form I guess..

..and then there’s the “use both Hands” option..
DSC_7032
(Bigger axehead goes here)

I did think about using a nice dynamic sculpt like Khan as the basis of this, but ya know, he’s mail order only.. and metal.. How hard do I want this to be? especially when the minute I finish him the FW release will happen :)

Anyway I thought I’d let you guys see every stage and fettle of this to see what I play with before I get to a place I am happy and reach for the glue.

I’m also more than happy to entertain comment/notions from you. although I reserve the right to carry on regardless :)

On the Bench

Well, desk really..

Thought I’d post what’s going on, as nowt is actually finished, that and talk about some plans.

In my office I have a desk with two “wings”, and usually one side is where I build, the other where I paint, but sometimes I let one thing take over, at the moment I’m trying to get my eye back in with the painting, it’s amazing how quickly you get rusty.

DSC_7023

over here on the left in what is usually the build area (and also where I do any real doodling or illustration type stuff) you can see two MM/HF speeders in full flow of being painted. I’m treating these like any other vehicle and going to give them the full weathering treatment. kindof unhappy with current state of paint as they came out a bit less contrasty than I wanted in the grey department. a problem i also had with..

DSC_7024

The wolf scouts that are on the other side of the bench. I may well give these fellows some weathering too, I want them quite gnarly.

so that’s what I’ve got “in paint”. both giving me some issues, finding it hard to get back in. I think I need to build something.

That said I’ve some ideas for a Bran Redmaw build, having read the rules he’s just utterly perfect for the way I play the wolves, and is likely to mean I( can no longer play them in polite company as he might well just give me an “I win” button. not because he’s overpowered, but because he synergises so well with my view of the wolves as fast, outflanking and uncompromising.

So, watch this space – I may even ask question as I try to build a Bran :)
